Perched on the rugged tip of South Head at Sydney’s entrance, Hornby Lighthouse is a pint-sized stunner with a big history. Built in 1858 after two tragic shipwrecks, this candy-striped red-and-white tower stands just 9 metres tall but commands sweeping views of the Tasman Sea, the harbour mouth, and the dramatic sandstone cliffs. It’s a short, scenic walk from Watsons Bay, making it an easy escape from the city that feels like a world away.
Highlights & What to See
- The lighthouse itself – one of the oldest in NSW, with its iconic red-and-white bands, automated light, and a tiny keeper’s cottage. The surrounding headland is a prime whale-watching spot (May–November).
- South Head Heritage Trail – a 2 km loop from Watsons Bay wharf that passes the lighthouse, historic gun emplacements, and the naval station. The trail offers jaw-dropping views of the harbour and ocean.
- Gap Bluff lookout – a short detour for vertiginous views of the sheer cliffs and the churning sea below, plus a plaque honouring the wreck of the Dunbar.
- Camp Cove – a sheltered golden-sand beach on the way, perfect for a swim or picnic with harbour views.
- Lady Bay Beach – a clothing-optional cove just south of the lighthouse, accessed by a steep path; popular with locals for its seclusion.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow 1.5–2 hours for the walk from Watsons Bay, including stops at the lighthouse and lookouts. Add another hour if you want to swim at Camp Cove or picnic on the grass. Morning or late afternoon offers the best light for photos and fewer crowds. Combine with a ferry ride from Circular Quay for a classic Sydney day out.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Watsons Bay – just a 10-minute walk; grab fish and chips at Doyles on the Beach or a drink at the Watsons Bay Hotel overlooking the harbour.
- Vaucluse House – a historic 19th-century estate with gardens and a café, a 20-minute drive or bus ride away.
- Bondi Beach – a 15-minute drive south; walk the Bondi to Coogee coastal trail for more spectacular clifftop views.
- Rose Bay – a scenic harbour suburb with seaplane flights and a lovely waterfront walk, 10 minutes by ferry or car.
- Manly – catch a ferry from Watsons Bay to Manly (30 minutes) for its surf beach, Corso, and North Head walks.
