Tai O Fishing Village
Perched on the western coast of Lantau Island, Tai O is a living, breathing relic of Hong Kong's fishing heritage. Known as the 'Venice of Hong Kong', this stilt-house village feels a world away from the neon-lit skyscrapers of Central. Here, narrow alleys lead past drying seafood, rickety wooden walkways hover over tidal creeks, and the scent of shrimp paste mingles with salt air. It's a place where time slows, and the rhythms of the sea still dictate daily life.
Highlights & What to See
- Stilt Houses (Pang uk): Wander the elevated boardwalks above Tai O Creek to see the iconic stilt houses, built by Tanka fishermen who once lived on their boats. Peek into open doorways for a glimpse of traditional domestic life.
- Tai O Market: The main street is a sensory overload—hawkers sell dried fish, shrimp paste (a local specialty), squid, and scallops. Try the freshly grilled squid skewers or a bowl of daan jai (cart noodles) at one of the dai pai dongs.
- Tai O Heritage Hotel: Housed in a former 1902 Marine Police station, this boutique hotel offers a glimpse into colonial history. Even if you're not staying, stop for afternoon tea on the verandah with views of the Pearl River Delta.
- Sampan Rides: Hop on a small motorised sampan for a 20-minute cruise through the village's waterways and out to the open sea. Keep an eye out for pink dolphins—they're rare but occasionally spotted.
- Kwan Tai Temple: This 300-year-old temple dedicated to the god of war and righteousness is a serene spot, with intricate wood carvings and a peaceful courtyard.
Suggested Time to Spend

If you're a keen photographer, linger until late afternoon when the golden light softens the village. It's a perfect stop on a day trip from Hong Kong Island, combined with other Lantau attractions.
