Heathcote Wine Region
Stretching along the slopes of the ancient Cambrian soil belt, the Heathcote Wine Region is one of Victoria’s most compelling cool-climate destinations. This is shiraz country at its finest—bold, peppery, and elegant. But beyond the cellar doors, you’ll find a landscape of granite outcrops, eucalypt forests, and quiet country roads perfect for a self-drive escape. The region’s gold-rush history lingers in the main street of Heathcote township, where old pubs and local bakeries offer a warm welcome between tastings.
Highlights & What to See
- Shiraz trail: Work your way along the Heathcote Wine and Food Trail, stopping at iconic wineries like Jasper Hill, Heathcote Estate, and Sanguine Estate for cellar-door tastings and vineyard views.
- Mt Ida Lookout: A short walk rewards you with panoramic views over the valley and the surrounding box-ironbark forests.
- Heathcote town: Browse the antique shops, grab a coffee at the Redesdale Hotel, and visit the Heathcote Visitor Information Centre for maps and local tips.
- Box-Ironbark forests: Explore the Greater Heathcote region’s walking trails and birdwatching spots, especially around the Heathcote-Graytown National Park.
- Local produce: Don’t miss the Heathcote Farmers’ Market (monthly) for artisan cheeses, olives, and seasonal fruit.
Suggested Time to Spend
Two to three days is ideal to do the region justice. Spend the first day touring the southern wineries and the town, then dedicate the second to the northern vineyards and a hike in the national park. If you’re pressed for time, a long day trip from Melbourne is feasible—allow at least 90 minutes each way—but you’ll wish you’d stayed overnight. The region is compact enough to feel intimate, but the quality of the wineries rewards a leisurely pace.
