Granite Belt Wineries

Queensland's Granite Belt is a surprising cool-climate wine region, where vineyards carpet rolling hills at 800–1000 metres elevation. The granite-rich soils and crisp nights produce exceptional wines, particularly reds like Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon, and crisp whites such as Verdelho and Viognier. Beyond the cellar doors, the area charms with art galleries, farmers' markets and dramatic granite outcrops. This is a place where you can taste a bold red at a rustic winery, then hike through boulder-strewn national parks — all within a self-drive day trip from Brisbane or as part of a longer Southern Queensland Country itinerary.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allow two to three days to properly explore the Granite Belt. With a car, you can visit 4–6 cellar doors per day without rushing. Spend the first day touring the northern wineries around Stanthorpe, and the second day heading south towards Ballandean and the NSW border. Add a morning hike in Girraween National Park for a dose of nature. If you're short on time, a long day trip from Brisbane is possible, but you'll only scratch the surface — an overnight stay is highly recommended.
