Perched on the border with North Korea, Dandong offers a rare window into one of the world's most isolated nations. This gritty yet fascinating city on the Yalu River is a blend of Chinese frontier life, Cold War history, and stunning natural scenery. The rusting bridges and distant propaganda music create an atmosphere unlike anywhere else in China.
Highlights & What to See
- Yalu River Broken Bridge: A half-destroyed bridge bombed during the Korean War, now a poignant memorial with views across to North Korea's Sinuiju.
- Yalu River Bridge (Sino-Korean Friendship Bridge): Still in use, this bridge connects China and North Korea; you can walk or cycle partway for a close-up look at cross-border trains and trucks.
- Hushan Great Wall: The easternmost point of the Ming Great Wall, offering dramatic river views and a glimpse of North Korean villages just across the water.
- Yalu River Scenic Area: Take a boat cruise (stay on the Chinese side) to see North Korean soldiers, farms, and factories up close – a surreal experience.
- Dandong Anti-Japanese War Memorial Hall: A well-presented museum detailing the city's role in the war, with outdoor exhibits of tanks and aircraft.
- Jinjiang Park: A peaceful riverside park with statues of Mao and Kim Il-sung, popular for evening strolls and people-watching.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend one full day in Dandong – enough to see the bridges, take a river cruise, and visit Hushan Great Wall. If you have a second day, consider a trip to the nearby Yalu River Wetlands or the Phoenix Mountain scenic area. The city is compact and walkable, so a day trip from Shenyang (3–4 hours by train) is feasible but rushed. Overnight stays are recommended for sunset views over the river.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Dalian: A coastal city with Russian and Japanese colonial architecture, beaches, and seafood – about 3 hours south by train.
- Benxi Water Cave: A spectacular underground river system with boat tours, ideal for nature lovers – roughly 2 hours from Dandong.
- Qianshan National Park: Known for its granite peaks and Buddhist temples, perfect for hiking – located between Anshan and Dandong.
- North Korea Border Towns (via tour): While you cannot cross independently, day trips from Dandong to Sinuiju are possible through organized tours – check current availability.
