Coloane
Coloane is the quiet, green counterpart to Macau's casino-fueled Cotai Strip. This southern island preserves a slower pace of life, with fishing villages, wooded hills, and sandy beaches. It's where travelers come to escape the neon and discover a side of Macau that feels more like rural Portugal or southern China. A day here means hiking forested trails, eating freshly grilled seafood at a waterfront shack, and soaking up a colonial-era charm that lingers in its narrow lanes.
Highlights & What to See
- Hac Sa Beach – Macau's largest natural beach is famous for its dark sand. The adjacent park has barbecue pits, a pool, and the quirky Coloane Trail start.
- Fernando's Restaurant – A legendary Portuguese-Macanese eatery on Hac Sa Beach. Order the grilled chicken, clams in garlic sauce, and a cold beer under the fans.
- Coloane Village – A sleepy fishing settlement with pastel colonial houses, a small pier, and the Chapel of St. Francis Xavier. Grab a pastel de nata from Lord Stow's Bakery (the original).
- A-Ma Cultural Village – A hilltop complex dedicated to the Chinese sea goddess. The views over the Pearl River Delta are stunning.
- Coloane Trail – A 4.5-km hiking path that loops around the island's highest point, Alto de Coloane. It passes through bamboo groves and offers glimpses of the South China Sea.
- Macau Giant Panda Pavilion – A modern exhibit in Seac Pai Van Park, home to two giant pandas plus red pandas and other native species.
Suggested Time to Spend
Coloane can be seen in a single day, but it's best savored as a slow half-day escape from Macau's casinos. Arrive around 10am, explore the village and A-Ma Cultural Village, have a leisurely lunch at Fernando's, then hike the Coloane Trail in the afternoon. If you want to swim, tack on a couple of hours at Hac Sa Beach. For a relaxed pace, stay overnight at the Pousada de Coloane — a Portuguese-style inn that feels a world away from the city.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Taipa Village – A 15-minute bus ride away, Taipa's old town has temples, a food market, and the iconic Rua do Cunha with its egg tarts and pork chop buns.
- Cotai Strip – The mega-casino and resort corridor between Taipa and Coloane. Worth a gawk for its architectural excess, but not for the authentic Macau experience.
- Macau Peninsula – The historic heart of Macau, with the Ruins of St. Paul's, Senado Square, and the A-Ma Temple. Combine with Coloane for a two-day Macau itinerary.
- Hengqin Island – Directly west of Coloane, this Chinese island has the Zhuhai Chimelong Ocean Kingdom theme park. Accessible via the Lotus Bridge border crossing.
- Zhuhai – The mainland Chinese city just north of Macau. Take a ferry or bus from the Macau border gate for a day trip to see the Fisher Girl statue and beach promenade.
