Clairview is a tiny coastal settlement on the Capricorn Coast of Queensland, midway between Rockhampton and Mackay. With a sweeping beach, turquoise waters, and a laid-back atmosphere, it's the kind of place you stumble upon and never want to leave. The town is essentially a single road of beach shacks, a general store, and a caravan park, but its raw natural beauty and sense of isolation are its biggest draws. It's a classic Queensland beachside escape, perfect for a quiet few days of swimming, fishing, and watching the sun sink into the Coral Sea.
Highlights & What to See
- Clairview Beach: A long, uncrowded stretch of sand that's ideal for swimming, beachcombing, or simply lazing under a beach umbrella. The water is calm and clear, making it safe for families.
- Fishing at the Clairview Jetty: The historic timber jetty is a popular spot for catching mackerel, whiting, and flathead. Even if you don't fish, it's a great place for a sunset stroll.
- Wildlife watching: Keep an eye out for dolphins playing in the surf, and from June to November you might spot humpback whales migrating along the coast.
- St. Lawrence Wetlands: A short drive north, these wetlands are a birdwatcher's paradise, with prolific birdlife including brolgas, jabirus, and many waterfowl.
- Nearby islands: The Percy Group and the Keppel Islands are visible offshore and can be visited by charter boat for snorkelling and diving.
Suggested Time to Spend
Clairview is a stopover rather than a destination in itself. Most travellers spend one or two nights here, often as a break on the drive between Rockhampton and Mackay. If you're just passing through, an hour or two to stretch your legs on the beach and grab a coffee at the general store is enough. For a proper taste of the coast, a full day gives you time to swim, fish, and take a short drive to the St. Lawrence Wetlands. The relaxed pace means you can easily spend a lazy weekend here, especially if you're staying in the caravan park or one of the holiday rentals.
