Carnarvon, a sunbaked outpost on the Coral Coast, is the Gascoyne region’s unlikely oasis. Hugging the mouth of the Gascoyne River, this tiny town is famous for its plantations, space-tracking station and laid-back fishing vibe. It’s the kind of place where the pace slows to a crawl and the starry skies are as big as the stories.
Highlights & What to See
- Space & Technology Museum: Marvel at the giant dish of the Carnarvon Space Tracking Station, which played a crucial role in NASA’s Apollo missions. The museum is a fascinating detour into the Space Race.
- Plantations & Tropical Fruit: Carnarvon’s microclimate grows bananas, mangoes and avocados. Visit the local plantation shops for fresh produce and homemade chutneys – the banana fritters at the River Garden are legendary.
- One Mile Jetty: Stroll, fish or crab off this historic timber jetty that juts into the Indian Ocean. Sunset from here is a local ritual.
- Binningup Beach & Blowholes: Head north to the dramatic Quobba Blowholes, where the ocean surges through rock fissures, shooting spray high into the air. It’s wild and utterly captivating.
- Gascoyne River: Don’t be fooled by its sandy bed – this ephemeral river sustains the town. Spot birdlife along its banks and learn about the region’s Aboriginal heritage at the local cultural centre.
Suggested Time to Spend
Two nights are enough to soak up Carnarvon’s main sights. Spend your first day exploring the Space Museum and plantation shops, then drive north to the blowholes for sunset. On day two, relax at the jetty or take a fishing charter. If you’re self-driving up the Coral Coast, Carnarvon makes a logical overnight stop between Kalbarri and Exmouth.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Shark Bay (Monkey Mia & Denham): A 4-hour drive south, this World Heritage area offers friendly dolphins, stromatolites and shell beaches.
- Exmouth & Ningaloo Reef: Continue north for 4 hours to swim with whale sharks and explore the fringing reef.
- Kalbarri National Park: Three hours south, with stunning coastal gorges and wildflower displays in season.
- Kennedy Range National Park: A less-visited gem of red sandstone cliffs and deep canyons, perfect for a half-day 4WD adventure.
