Cape Arid National Park is a wild and remote coastal wilderness on Western Australia’s south coast, about 120 km east of Esperance. With its dramatic granite peaks, pristine white-sand beaches, and heathlands bursting with wildflowers in spring, this park feels like the edge of the world. It’s a place for serious nature lovers — expect solitude, incredible birdlife, and a sense of discovery around every corner.
Highlights & What to See
- Mount Arid — A granite dome offering panoramic views of the Recherche Archipelago and the Southern Ocean. The steep but rewarding climb takes about 2 hours return.
- Belinup Beach — A stunning, undeveloped beach perfect for a picnic or a walk. Watch for dolphins and sea eagles soaring overhead.
- Thomas River — A tranquil estuary where you can spot black swans, pelicans, and kangaroos. Great for canoeing or just soaking up the peaceful atmosphere.
- Coastal heathlands — In spring (August–November), the park explodes with colour — banksias, grevilleas, and orchids attract nectar-feeding birds like honeyeaters and the rare western spinebill.
- Four-wheel-drive tracks — The park is best explored with a high-clearance 4WD. The main track leads to a series of beautiful, isolated campsites right on the coast.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan for at least a full day to experience the park’s highlights — start early with a sunrise hike up Mount Arid, then spend the rest of the day exploring beaches and the Thomas River area. If you’re camping, two days and one night is ideal, allowing you to watch the sunset over the ocean and stargaze in the clear, dark skies. Those with a 4WD can venture deeper into the park’s more remote corners.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Esperance — The nearest town, with stunning beaches like Lucky Bay (famous for its kangaroos on the sand) and the Cape Le Grand National Park. A great base for supplies and accommodation.
- Cape Le Grand National Park — Just 50 km west, this park offers more iconic beaches and the challenging hike to Frenchman Peak. Combine with Cape Arid for a comprehensive south-coast adventure.
- Recherche Archipelago — A group of over 100 islands visible from Cape Arid. Boat tours from Esperance offer a chance to see seabird colonies, fur seals, and possibly even white-bellied sea eagles.
- Stokes National Park — A lesser-known gem west of Esperance, with dramatic coastal cliffs and the historic Stokes Inlet. Worth a detour if you have extra time.
