Stretching from the foothills of the Southern Alps to the Pacific coast, the Canterbury Plains are New Zealand's most expansive patchwork of farmland, braided rivers, and wide-open skies. This is a landscape that feels both tranquil and epic, where you can cycle past fields of grazing sheep, spot a soaring harrier hawk, and watch the sun set over snow-capped peaks. The plains offer a quintessential Kiwi road-trip experience, with small towns, historic homesteads, and outdoor adventures waiting at every turn.
Highlights & What to See
- Christchurch – New Zealand's 'Garden City' blends post-earthquake regeneration with Victorian charm; explore the street art, punting on the Avon, and the new Convention Centre Precinct.
- Akaroa – A French-influenced harbour town on Banks Peninsula, perfect for dolphin-spotting cruises, fresh seafood, and scenic coastal walks.
- Ōtautahi / Christchurch Botanic Gardens – 21 hectares of themed gardens, including the iconic Rose Garden and the subtropical Conservatory.
- Hamner Springs – A thermal resort town with hot pools, mountain biking trails, and jet-boat rides; ideal for a relaxing soak after a day of exploring.
- Banks Peninsula Track – A stunning 4-day walk (or shorter sections) across volcanic ridges and secluded bays, with podocarp forest and native birdlife.
- Canterbury Wine Region – Vineyards around Waipara produce world-class pinot noir and riesling; cellar doors offer tastings with mountain views.
Suggested Time to Spend
You could easily spend a week exploring the Canterbury Plains, but if you're on a tighter itinerary, allow three to four days. Base yourself in Christchurch for two nights, using one day for the city and a second for a day trip to Akaroa or the Waipara wine region. Add an extra night in Hamner Springs for the hot pools and outdoor activities, or continue south towards the Mackenzie Country and Aoraki/Mount Cook.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Kaikōura – Famous for whale watching, seals, and crayfish; a 2.5-hour drive north along the stunning coastal highway.
- Mackenzie Country – The gateway to Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park and the dark-sky reserve at Lake Tekapo; 2–3 hours inland.
- Arthur's Pass National Park – Alpine scenery, waterfalls, and kea parrots; a scenic drive west over the Southern Alps.
- Ōamaru – Victorian precinct, blue penguin colony, and steampunk culture; 1.5 hours south on the coastal route.
- Franz Josef & Fox Glaciers – A longer drive (5 hours) but worth it for glacier walks, helicopter tours, and West Coast rainforest.
