Deep in the Flinders Ranges of South Australia, the tiny historic town of Blinman feels like a secret worth discovering. With a population hovering around a dozen, this former copper-mining hub is a quiet, dusty time capsule surrounded by dramatic rust-red gorges and vast blue skies. The main street is little more than a dirt track, but it holds one of the state’s most characterful pubs, a handful of heritage buildings, and the palpable ghosts of a boom-and-bust past. For self-drive adventurers, Blinman makes an excellent base for exploring the northern Flinders without the crowds of Wilpena Pound.
Highlights & What to See
- Blinman Mine Tour – Descend into the original copper mine (operated 1862–1918) on a guided underground tour. You’ll see old workings, tools and learn about the miners’ hardscrabble lives; it’s surprisingly cool and atmospheric even in summer.
- Blinman Pub (The North Blinman Hotel) – An essential pit stop for a cold beer and a hearty meal. The pub’s walls are plastered with mining memorabilia, and the verandah is perfect for watching the sun set over the ranges.
- Heritage Walk – A self-guided stroll past the old post office, schoolhouse, police station and stone cottages. Pick up a map from the information board near the pub.
- Blinman Lookout – A short walk from town offers panoramic views over the valley and the weathered peaks beyond. It’s especially stunning in late afternoon light.
- Bunyip Gorge – A nearby waterhole and gorge with a short walking trail. Look for yabbies in the creek and ancient river red gums.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend a full day in Blinman, which is enough to take the mine tour, do the heritage walk, have lunch at the pub and explore the immediate surrounds. If you’re self-driving, consider staying one night at the pub’s accommodation or the campground to experience the incredible dark-sky stargazing. For a deeper immersion, base yourself here for two to three days and use it as a launchpad for walks and drives in the northern Flinders Ranges.
