Bindoon is a small rural town in Western Australia's Avon Valley, roughly 80 km north-east of Perth. It's a quiet, unpretentious place that surprises visitors with its rich history and striking natural surrounds — think rolling green hills, wildflower-speckled bushland, and a tangible sense of the pioneering past.
Highlights & What to See
- Bindoon Military Museum: Housed in a former WWII army camp, this museum offers a fascinating glimpse into the lives of Australian soldiers and the town's military heritage. The collection includes vehicles, uniforms, and personal memorabilia.
- Bindoon Hill Lookout: A short, steep walk rewards you with panoramic views over the town, the Darling Scarp, and on clear days, all the way to the coast. It's especially beautiful at sunrise or sunset.
- Bindoon Heritage Trail: A self-guided walk that takes you past historic buildings, including the original post office, the convent school, and the Bindoon Hotel — a classic country pub with a welcoming beer garden.
- Wildflower Walks: In spring (August–October), the surrounding bushland erupts with native wildflowers. The Bindoon Nature Reserve and nearby Chittering Valley are prime spots for spotting everlastings, orchids, and grevilleas.
- Bindoon Farmers Market: Held on the first Saturday of each month, this small market showcases local produce, artisan breads, honey, and crafts. It's a great place to chat with locals and stock up for a picnic.
Suggested Time to Spend
Bindoon makes an easy half-day or full-day trip from Perth. If you're just passing through, an hour or two is enough to explore the museum, take in the lookout, and grab a drink at the pub. For a more leisurely visit, combine it with a walk in the nature reserve and a picnic lunch — aim for 3–4 hours. History buffs may want to linger longer at the museum.
