Ballina is a laid-back coastal town at the mouth of the Richmond River, where the surfing beaches meet subtropical rainforest. With a relaxed vibe, excellent seafood, and a strong Indigenous Bundjalung heritage, it’s a perfect stop on a drive between Byron Bay and the Gold Coast.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Ballina works well as a day trip from Byron Bay (30 minutes north) or a relaxed overnight stop. If you have a full day, spend the morning at the museum and a coastal walk, then enjoy a fish-and-chip lunch at the riverfront. Afternoon is best for a swim at Shelly Beach or a cruise. For a more immersive experience, stay two nights to explore Bundjalung National Park and the hinterland villages.
