Welcome to Airlie Beach, the sparkling gateway to the Whitsunday Islands and the Great Barrier Reef. This lively coastal town on Queensland's Coral Coast is a tropical paradise that blends laid-back beach vibes with a buzzing social scene. With its turquoise lagoon, swaying palm trees, and a main street lined with alfresco cafés and boutiques, Airlie Beach is the perfect launchpad for exploring some of the world's most stunning islands, fringing reefs, and pristine white-sand beaches.
Highlights & What to See
- Whitsunday Islands National Park & Whitehaven Beach – Take a day cruise or scenic flight to the swirling white silica sands of Whitehaven Beach and the iconic Hill Inlet lookout. The colours are simply unreal.
- Great Barrier Reef excursions – Snorkel or dive on the outer reef with operators departing daily from Airlie Beach. Spot turtles, clownfish, and technicolour coral gardens.
- Airlie Beach Lagoon – The free, man-made saltwater swimming lagoon is the town's social hub, complete with grassy picnic areas and barbecues. Perfect for a safe dip when stinger season is in full swing.
- Conway National Park – Hike the Whitsunday Great Walk for panoramic views over the coast and islands, or take a shorter stroll to Cedar Creek Falls for a refreshing swim under a cascade.
- Bicentennial Walkway – A scenic coastal path linking the lagoon to Cannonvale Beach, ideal for a sunset stroll or a morning jog with ocean views.
- Abel Point Marina – Watch the superyachts and sailing boats come and go, then grab a drink at one of the waterfront bars or restaurants.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most travellers spend at least three to four nights in Airlie Beach to allow for a full-day Great Barrier Reef trip, a Whitsunday Islands sailing excursion, and a day to simply relax by the lagoon or explore the town's cafés. If you're self-driving the coast, two nights is the minimum to get a taste, but you'll wish you had longer. Add an extra day if you plan to hike in Conway National Park or take a scenic flight over Heart Reef.
