Tharwa
Tucked into the rugged Murrumbidgee River valley, Tharwa is a tiny historic village that feels a world away from Canberra, yet lies less than 40 minutes south. With its stone bridge, old schoolhouse, and easy access to Namadgi National Park, Tharwa is a perfect launchpad for ACT wilderness adventures.
Highlights & What to See
- Tharwa Bridge – Australia's oldest surviving Allan truss bridge, built in 1895. Stop for a photo and watch the river flow beneath.
- Tharwa Schoolhouse – A charming 1890s timber school that now serves as a community museum (check opening times).
- Namadgi National Park – From Tharwa you can access the park's northern trails, including the popular Yankee Hat walking track with its Aboriginal rock art.
- Murrumbidgee River – Perfect for a picnic, a paddle, or a gentle fishing spot. Look for platypus at dawn or dusk.
- Lanyon Homestead – Just a few kilometres north, this historic 1850s property offers a glimpse into early settler life, set against beautiful gardens and river views.
Suggested Time to Spend
Tharwa itself is a quick stop – allow 30 minutes to browse the village and walk over the bridge. To combine with a walk in Namadgi or a visit to Lanyon Homestead, budget a half-day. For a full day, pack a picnic and tackle one of the longer trails in the national park, such as the Mount Tennent summit walk.
