Googong Foreshore is a serene lakeside escape just a short drive from Canberra, offering a perfect blend of water-based recreation, bushwalking, and family-friendly picnicking against a backdrop of rolling hills and eucalypt forest. This man-made reservoir, part of the Googong Dam system, feels a world away from the capital's urban bustle, yet remains easily accessible for a half-day trip or a full day of outdoor exploration.
Highlights & What to See
- Googong Dam & Reservoir: Walk or cycle across the dam wall for panoramic views across the water to the surrounding bushland. The reservoir is a key water supply for Canberra, so swimming is not permitted, but it's a stunning spot for photography and birdwatching.
- Foreshore Walking & Cycling Trails: The 6.5 km Foreshore Loop Track meanders along the water's edge, offering easy walking with plenty of spots to stop and take in the scenery. It's also popular with mountain bikers, with several connecting fire trails for more adventurous rides.
- Picnic & BBQ Facilities: Multiple shady picnic areas with tables, electric barbecues, and toilets are dotted along the foreshore. The main picnic area near the boat ramp is a favourite for families, with plenty of grass and a playground for kids.
- Fishing: The reservoir is stocked with Murray cod, golden perch, and trout. Cast a line from the bank or bring a kayak (electric motors only) to access quieter spots. A NSW fishing license is required.
- Wildlife & Birdwatching: Keep an eye out for kangaroos grazing at dawn and dusk, and listen for the calls of superb fairywrens, crimson rosellas, and wedge-tailed eagles soaring overhead.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend between two and four hours at Googong Foreshore, which is enough for a leisurely walk or bike ride, a barbecue lunch, and some time fishing or simply relaxing by the water. If you're keen to explore the longer trails or combine a visit with a stop at the adjacent Googong Conservation Area, plan for a full half-day. The area is best visited in spring or autumn when the weather is mild; summer mornings are also pleasant before the heat sets in.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Canberra: Just 20 minutes' drive away, the national capital offers world-class museums, galleries, and dining. Combine a morning at the foreshore with an afternoon at the Australian War Memorial or the National Gallery of Australia.
- Googong Conservation Area: Adjacent to the foreshore, this protected area features additional walking trails through box-gum woodland and is a great spot for wildflower spotting in spring.
- Queanbeyan: A historic river town with a lively café scene and the Queanbeyan River walk, perfect for a coffee stop on the way back to Canberra.
