Hidden in the heart of Namadgi National Park, Ginini Falls is one of the Australian Capital Territory’s most rewarding – and least-visited – natural wonders. This seasonal cascade plunges over a rugged granite escarpment into a misty pool, surrounded by ancient snow gums and subalpine woodland. The journey to the falls is an adventure in itself, taking you deep into a landscape shaped by fire and ice, with panoramic views over the Brindabella Ranges. It’s a place for those who crave solitude and raw, untamed beauty.
Highlights & What to See
- The Falls Themselves: Best visited in spring or after heavy rain, the waterfall drops about 30 metres into a serene pool. In drier months, the rock face still impresses with its sculpted granite forms.
- Ginini Flats: The surrounding subalpine bog is a fragile ecosystem of rare sphagnum moss and wildflowers. Keep an eye out for the elusive northern corroboree frog, a tiny black-and-yellow amphibian found only here.
- Mount Ginini Summit: A short detour from the falls track leads to the summit (1762 m), where you’re rewarded with 360-degree views of the ACT and Kosciuszko National Park.
- Wildlife Spotting: Eastern grey kangaroos, wombats, and crimson rosellas are common. At dusk, you might hear the call of a sooty owl.
- Walking Tracks: The main Ginini Falls Walk (6 km return) is a moderate grade through snow gum forest and open heath, with interpretive signs about the area’s Aboriginal heritage and 2003 bushfires.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allocate a full day for the visit, especially if you’re driving from Canberra (about 1.5 hours one way). The walk itself takes 2–3 hours at a relaxed pace, plus time to explore the summit and picnic by the falls. Start early to avoid afternoon thunderstorms in summer, and remember that the road to the trailhead (Boboyan Road) is unsealed and may be closed after snow or heavy rain. This is a destination for a full-day adventure, not a quick stop.
