Canberra Space Centre
Perched on the outskirts of Canberra, the Canberra Space Centre is a gateway to the cosmos. This compact but captivating museum is part of the Canberra Deep Space Communication Complex, one of NASA's three global tracking stations. Here, you can touch a piece of the Moon, see real spacecraft hardware, and learn how scientists communicate with missions exploring our solar system. It's a must-visit for space enthusiasts and anyone curious about Australia’s role in deep-space exploration.
Highlights & What to See
- Moon Rock Display: One of the few places in Australia where you can touch a real lunar sample – a 3.8-billion-year-old piece of the Moon brought back by Apollo 17.
- Antenna Viewing: Peer through windows at the massive 70-metre dish antenna that has tracked everything from the Apollo missions to the Mars rovers.
- Interactive Exhibits: Try your hand at landing a spacecraft on Mars, see a full-scale model of a Mars rover, and explore the history of space exploration through hands-on displays.
- Spacecraft Artefacts: View actual space-flown hardware, including a piece of the Skylab space station that fell to Earth in Western Australia.
- Film Screenings: Watch short films about the Deep Space Network and Australia’s role in space science, shown in a small theatre.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 1–2 hours exploring the centre, which is enough to see the exhibits, watch a film, and admire the antennas. If you're a keen space buff, allow 2–3 hours to read all the panels and chat with the knowledgeable volunteers. The site is small, so it’s easy to combine with other attractions in the Canberra region on a day trip.
